?70s band back with past, future fusion

Spyro Gyra may have formed in the mid-1970s, but they don?t live in the past.

Instead, the band has continually reinvented itself and seen second- and perhaps even third-generation fans grow along with them.

“We are a band that had a lot of sales in the 1980s and established a solid fan base,” said leader/saxophonist/producer Jay Beckenstein. “The music we play continues to attract that core audience as well as new fans, [some of whom are] their kids.”

Inspired by jazz fusion, pop and R&B, Spyro Gyra have used the latest technology to continually develop and freshen their sound.

The band?s latest offering, “Wrapped in a Dream,” is a coolly textured creation of melodies inspired by individual parts of the members? lives. “Woogitybop,” the last song on the CD, was actually inspired by Beckenstein?s daughter and his nickname for her. Another track, “Impressions of Madrid,” is a tribute to the music he experienced in Spain.

“It?s interesting because so often I have to force myself into the process [of writing],” Beckenstein said. “But once I do, I become totally wrapped up in it.”

The band has gone through some changes, though, including reducing its size from the original seven members to five. But that, Beckenstein said, is a positive.

“Over the years, we?ve changed as the world has changed,” Beckenstein said. “But that has opened up space for the [other members] to grow and do more individually.”

It also allows more room for guest artists to participate. Drummer Josh Dion, marimba/vibraphone master Dave Samuels, trumpeter Nathan Eklund, trombonist Eric Oliver and percussionist Cyro Baptista are included on the band?s latest album.

“The group is like a family and we are very much like brothers,” said longtime keyboardist Tom Schuman. “But it?s the fans that really inspire us to pack our bags and get on tour. They are always there for us, and that?s why we?re doing this.”
