Despite being spoken by approximately 1.5 billion people, English is often misused and words are frequently mispronounced. The U.S. Captioning Company took note of these mispronunciations and recently released a list of the most mispronounced words of the year as measured by a survey of prominent TV figures.
From cheugy to yassify, here are the most mispronounced words of 2021.

- Cheugy (CHOO-gee): a person with habits and fashion that mirrors trends associated with millennials and the early 2010s.
- Chipotle (chih-POHT-lay): a popular fast-food chain that serves Mexican food that has been around for over 30 years.
- Dalgona (tal-goh-NAH): a popular Korean candy in the 1970s and 1980s that gained attention in 2021 due to the TV show Squid Game.
- Dogecoin (DOHJ-coin): a cryptocurrency similar to Bitcoin that was created as a joke. It took off after Elon Musk tweeted about it.
- Eilish (EYE-lish): a popular singer who released the Grammy Award-winning album Happier Than Ever in 2021.
- Ethereum (ih-THEE-ree-um): a cryptocurrency that is second to Bitcoin in terms of market capitalization.
- Ever Given (EV-er GIV-en): the ship that infamously blocked traffic in the Suez Canal in March. It took six days for officials to get the vessel out of its jam.
- Glasgow (GLAHZ-go): the name of the Scottish city where the United Nations Climate Change Conference was held in October and November.
- Kelce (KELs): Jason Kelce is the center for the Philadelphia Eagles. The football star is considered to be one of the top centers in the NFL.
- Omicron (AH-muh-kraan / OH-mee-kraan): the new strain of COVID-19 first detected in South Africa in November that quickly overtook the delta variant to become the dominant strain in the United States.
- Shein (SHEE-in): a Chinese online retail store that took off and became one of the most popular apps in 2021.
- Stefanos Tsitsipas (STEH-fuh-nohs TSEE-tsee-pas): a professional tennis player from Greece who at 23 became one of the top players in the world.
- Yassify (YEAH-sih-fai): applying an excessive number of filters to a popular image on the internet.
