Gerard Baker replaced as editor-in-chief of the Wall Street Journal

Gerard Baker is being replaced as editor-in-chief of the Wall Street Journal and Dow Jones Newswires.

He will be succeeded by Matt Murray, while Baker shifts to an editor-at-large position.

Over the last five and a half years under Baker, the Journal has expanded its news circulation by a third and cemented its platform as a trusted source with over 3 million subscribers to date, News Corp, which owns the Journal, said in a press release Tuesday.

Still, Baker has sometimes been a controversial figure, facing criticism from inside his own newsroom for appearing to be too soft on President Trump. Many journalists at the paper were surprised by his departure, moving from one Murdoch company to another, the Washington Post reported.

Baker’s new position entails focusing on the expansion of the paper, especially video journalism, which will now include a news and interview show on Fox Business Network.

Matt Murray, currently the executive editor of the newspaper will take over Baker’s old job on Monday.
