The Obama administration and the State Department have responded to multiple reports of Americans attempting to join ISIS, the Islamic terrorist group, by setting up a social media campaign called “Think Again, Turn Away.” The effort includes a Facebook page and a Twitter account designed to “expose the facts about terrorists and their propaganda.”
“Don’t be misled by those who break up families and destroy their true heritage,” the federal government entreats would-be terrorists.
One post on the campaign’s Facebook page from October 5 comments on the four-year anniversary of the sentencing of Faisal Shahzad, the Pakistani-born American citizen who attempted to bomb Times Square in New York City in 2010. “This father of two will never celebrate another birthday or see his children grow up,” reads the post. “Is that something you’d willingly give up? #thinkagainturnaway”
And a tweet from the Twitter account notes that ISIS pays those who fight for it:
The program appears to fall under the purview of Rick Stengel, the under secretary for public diplomacy and public affairs and the former managing editor of Time magazine.
