Sen. Kamala Harris talked about her recent campaign struggles in the 2020 Democratic presidential debate and said she still believes she can make a comeback despite the biases of American voters.
The California Democrat said in a Sunday interview with Axios on HBO that “electability” was the “elephant in the room” for her campaign. “Is America ready for a woman and a woman of color to be president of the United States?” Harris said.
When pressed about Barack Obama being elected as a black man, the 2020 contender reiterated the problem many had with imagining a black woman as president.
“There is a lack of ability or a difficulty in imagining that someone who we have never seen can do a job that has been done, you know, 45 times by someone who is not that person,” she said. Harris added that voters have the “ability to see what can be.”
Support for Harris’ campaign has lagged in recent months, with only 5% support, down from 15% support this summer, according to RealClearPolitics.
