City hall walls lined with art

The District has unveiled a permanent collection of artwork, featuring local artists from all eight wards, lining the walls of City Hall.

On the six public floors of the John A. Wilson Building, 1350 Pennsylvania Ave. NW, visitors will find 175 works by 100 artists. More than 300 artists submitted roughly 4,000 works for review by a seven-member selection committee, which included Jack Rasmussen, director and curator of American University’s Katzen Arts Center; Jacquelyn Serwer, curator of the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture; and Alec Simpson, executive director of the Dance Institute of Washington.

“The result is a collection of exceptional artwork, illustrative of the quality, history and diversity of our artists’ community,” said Tony Gittens, executive director of the D.C. Commission on the Arts and Humanities.

The Wilson Building is open to the public from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Photo identification is required to enter the facility.

From 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, the District will host an opening reception with music by the Duke Ellington School of the Arts Jazz Combo. Admission is free.
