Kamala Harris takes grand escalator ride to SC convention kickoff

COLUMBIA, S.C. — Kamala Harris’ entrance to her rally ahead of the South Carolina Democratic convention was a little bit Donald Trump, a little bit Beyoncé.

The 2020 hopeful came down an escalator at the Columbia Metropolitan Convention Center to kick off her Saturday rally. The room was filled with cheers, as Harris gave high fives and greeted a crowd of people holding signs supporting her candidacy.

The scene was somewhat reminiscent of President Trump’s entrance when he rode down the golden escalator at Trump Tower in New York to announce he was running for president in 2015, but with a twist. The California senator’s entrance also featured a drum line as a centerpiece, similar to Beyoncé’s 2018 Coachella performance, which paid tribute to historically black colleges and universities.

Students from Lower Richland High School played as Harris came down the escalator and walked to the room in which her rally was held. Harris and the students spent a couple minutes dancing outside of the room before another drum line from Killian Elementary greeted rallygoers inside the room.

“That’s that HBCU,” said Bakari Sellers, a CNN commentator and former South Carolina state lawmaker.
