Polling shows a divided New Hampshire presidential primary ahead of Trump visit

Former President Donald Trump will visit New Hampshire Saturday, but polling on the eve of his stop in the Granite State shows that he is already in a tight 2024 primary season.

According to the latest New Hampshire Journal/Coefficient poll released on Friday, 43% of the state’s primary voters support Trump’s bid for president while 42% want an alternative candidate. The poll showed Trump garnering 37% while Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis captured 26% and another 13% supported the current New Hampshire Gov, Chris Sununu.

The polling showed a competitive field for Democrats in New Hampshire. President Joe Biden was backed by only 37% of New Hampshire Democrats, leaving 46% wanting another candidate and 17% were undecided. In a separate breakout of alternative candidates, Biden only captured 25%, Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg received 16%, former first lady Michelle Obama at 15% and current Vice President Kamala Harris captured 5%.

The University of New Hampshire’s Survey Center published a poll on Thursday showing that pollsters found DeSantis, who has not yet announced his candidacy, has a notable double-digit lead over the former president, with 42% of likely New Hampshire Republican primary voters supporting him and just 30% backing Trump.

Trump’s victory in New Hampshire’s 2016 presidential primary helped change his trajectory toward winning the Republican primary and the White House.

The former president will make another stop on Saturday in South Carolina, a key early voting state in his bid for reelection.
