15 people died on Va. roads during holiday weekend

The Virginia State Police reported that 15 people died in automobile crashes on the commonwealth’s roads over the five-day Thanksgiving weekend. The total is one fewer than last year. State police and local departments increased patrols on the roads, hoping to nab unsafe drivers and stem the state’s increasing rate of road fatalities. Eight of the people killed were not wearing seat belts, state police said, and alcohol may have been a factor in two of the incidents. So far 924 people have been killed on Virginia roads this year. –Joe Rogalsky
