House Republicans remain loyal to President Trump as he maneuvers his way through legal disputes challenging several state boards of elections that called their respective races for his opponent, President-elect Joe Biden.
Trump met with Michigan Senate and House Republican leaders Friday to discuss the state’s 16 electoral votes that were awarded to Biden. The meeting happened just before Georgia certified its 16 electoral votes for Biden after a hand recount was completed.
Following a press conference Thursday at the Republican National Committee in which claims of voter fraud and ballot tampering were made by Trump legal team attorney Rudy Giuliani, GOP lawmakers continued to defend the process despite the uphill court battle the president faces.
“I think we should. You know, we got 24 days until the Electoral College has to meet. I think we should look at all these irregularities. We got several affidavits of people who said that strange things are happening in these states, so I’m for investigating all of it,” Ohio Republican Rep. Jim Jordan told the Washington Examiner.
Jordan, who also serves as the top Republican on the House Oversight Committee, sent a letter to Democratic Rep. Carolyn Maloney, who chairs the panel, as well as House Judiciary Chairman Jerry Nadler, a New York Democrat, for an investigation into voter irregularities in the 2020 election cycle.
“Frankly, I’m surprised at the Democrats. The same people who told us that you can trust everything about this election are the same people who told us you can believe the Steele dossier, the same people who told us you should believe the anonymous impeachment whistleblower. So, yeah, we need to get to the bottom of it all,” Jordan said.
House Freedom Caucus Chairman Andy Biggs snapped at a reporter who asked if Trump was undermining national security by not conceding to Biden.
“The Democrats have attacked the guy when he was running for office. You had officials spying. You had all of this stuff going on. On the transition, they evoked the Logan Act on Michael Flynn doing the same thing that Joe Biden himself has been doing,” the Arizona Republican said. “Don’t talk to me about undermining election and credibility. We haven’t even had a single state certified yet.”
House Minority Whip Steve Scalise, a Louisiana Republican, noted the affidavits that Giuliani talked about at the press conference.
“And there’s some very alarming allegations made with those affidavits. … Those allegations need to be answered. The fact that in multiple swing states where laws were broken or at least witnesses have sworn testimony that those laws were broken in the states, that’s something everybody should be concerned about, and it’s got to be answered in court,” Scalise said.
