House Oversight Committee investigating Air Force crew stop at Trump Scotland resort

Since April, the House Oversight Committee has been investigating an Air National Guard crew’s abrupt stop at President Trump’s Turnberry resort in Scotland while on a trip to Kuwait earlier this year, according to POLITICO.

The C-17 military transport plane made the stop both on its journey to and from the Middle East to deliver supplies, people familiar with the matter told the outlet. The committee has not yet obtained any response from the Department of Defense.

“The Defense Department has not produced a single document in this investigation,” one senior Democratic aide on the oversight panel said. “The committee will be forced to consider alternative steps if the Pentagon does not begin complying voluntarily in the coming days.”

The Oversight Committee’s probe is part of a larger investigation into military spending at Trump’s Turnberry property. The panel sent a letter to the Pentagon in June saying it had found the military spent as much as $11 million on fuel at the Prestwick Airport, which is the closest airport to the Scotland resort, since October 2017. The fuel would have been much less expensive if it had been bought at a U.S. military base.

The report comes amid scrutiny over Vice President Mike Pence’s stay at Trump International Golf Links & Hotel in Doonbeg, Ireland, despite attending meetings in Dublin, 182 miles away. Democrats erupted at Pence’s decision and accused the government of arranging visits to Trump’s resorts in an effort to bring the president personal revenue. The House Oversight Committee then opened an investigation into the matter as well.

The incidents have increased concerns that the military has helped Trump’s Turnberry resort stay in business after it was revealed that the property lost $4.5 million in 2017 but reversed course in 2018, gaining $3 million in revenue.
