Hawley: KBJ ‘thinks the criminal justice system is too hard on criminals’

Sen. Josh Hawley said he cannot support Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson’s confirmation to the Supreme Court because “when it comes to crime and crimes against children, this is somebody who apologizes to the criminals.”

Hawley, a Missouri Republican, appeared on Fox News’s Hannity Wednesday, saying her lenient sentences in child sex offender cases go against what families want.

“I think the American people watching this are saying, ‘Listen, I want somebody who is going to protect children, who’s going to be tough on child criminals — people who go after children — and not apologize to them,’” Hawley said. “I can’t vote for somebody on the U.S. Supreme Court who is going to apologize to criminals, who is not going to be tough when you need to be tough in order to protect children.”

The senator added that the Senate Judiciary Committee asked Jackson multiple times about her philosophy behind such lenient sentences. He said her answers reveal her agenda as a judge.

“She thinks the criminal justice system is too hard on criminals and those who commit child sex offenses,” Hawley said. “She thinks the system is too hard on them and that’s why 100% of the time the sentences have been less than the prosecution wanted in the guidelines.”

Hawley said every senator must factor that into their decision on whether to support Jackson’s confirmation to the Supreme Court.
