Former Senate Majority Leader Bob Dole referred to President Trump’s third State of the Union address as a “home run” and said it was one of the best he’s heard after serving more than 36 years in Congress.

Trump’s speech highlighted the accomplishments of his administration.
“Our agenda is relentlessly pro-worker, pro-family, pro-growth, and, most of all, pro-American,” the president said Tuesday night. “We are advancing with unbridled optimism and lifting our citizens of every race, color, religion, and creed very, very high.”
Dole, who ran for president in 1996, has criticized Trump in the past, most notably during the 2016 campaign.
“He says things over the top, and people applaud,” Dole said of Trump, in 2015. “He’s insulted about every other candidate,” he added.
However, Dole started to shift in 2016 and warned that nominating Sen. Ted Cruz would lead to “cataclysmic” defeat. He said that Trump would be the better choice for president.
Earlier this month, Dole was a guest in the Trump family’s luxury box at the Super Bowl in Miami.

In 1960, Dole was elected to the Kansas House of Representatives and, eight years later, was elected to the Senate. Dole served as chief of the Senate Finance Committee, Senate minority leader, and Senate majority leader before leaving the Senate in 1996.
