Iran “will be held to account” for its recent missile launch, a senior administration official said on Wednesday.
Iran launched a ballistic missile about 140 miles east of Tehran on Sunday. The missile travelled about 600 miles before it exploded in the failed test.
The launch did not violate the Iran nuclear deal, but is a violation of the United Nations Security Council resolution.
“Iranian behavior needs to be rethought by Tehran. We hope they heed this notice and change their behavior,” the administration official said, speaking on background.
National Security Adviser Mike Flynn announced earlier on Wednesday that the White House was officially “putting Iran on notice” over the violation.
The White House said it is in a “deliberative process” to determine the way forward and said there are a “range of options” to respond, including financial and economic sanctions or support for opponents of Iran.
Officials would not discuss the use of military force.
