Doc Severinsen canceled his scheduled show at the Joseph Meyerhoff Symphony Hall due to illness.
“Doc is really disappointed to have to cancel,” reported road manager Susan Steele in a news release. “He always enjoys performing for Baltimore audiences. Unfortunately, he’s developed a case of pneumonia and what he really needs is rest. I’m glad that he’s being wise and taking time to recover.”
In his place, the Duke Ellington Orchestra founded by the great Duke Ellington will perform at the Meyerhoff 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 3 p.m. Sunday.
Under Duke Ellington’s direction during the post-World War II era, the orchestra pioneered a new style of high-intensity jazz, fusing swing, pop and soul. Barrie Lee Hall Jr. will lead the Duke Ellington Orchestra during its Baltimore shows. On the set list are greatest hits such as “Don’t Mean A Thing (If it Ain’t Got That Swing,)” “Take the A Train,” “Mood Indigo” and “Satin Doll,” as well as Duke Ellington’s arrangement of “The Nutcracker” and other seasonal favorites.
The Meyerhoff is located at 1212 Cathedral St. in Baltimore. Tickets cost $20 to $60. For details, visit bsomusic.org.
