‘Persona non grata’: Six Russian spies expelled from France after investigation

Six Russian spies were declared “persona non grata” Monday and expelled from France following an investigation.

The spies were posing as foreign diplomats, the Foreign Ministry said.


“Six Russian agents operating under diplomatic cover and whose activities proved contrary to our national interests have been declared persona non grata,” it added.

“Following a very long investigation, the General Directorate of Internal Security (DGSI) revealed on Sunday April 10 a clandestine operation carried out by the Russian intelligence services on our territory,” read a statement from the Foreign Ministry, as reported by Reuters.

France is in the midst of a presidential election. President Emmanuel Macron will face Marine Le Pen in a runoff election after the two received the largest shares of the vote in a Sunday election.

The runoff is set for April 24.
