China does not condemn Russian invasion but will provide humanitarian aid to Ukraine

China will offer humanitarian aid to Ukraine despite not condemning the war started by Russian President Vladimir Putin more than a week ago.

The Foreign Minister for China, Wang Yi, said during a press conference on Monday that the Red Cross Society of China will provide supplies to help Ukrainians in need, according to Reuters.

“China is willing to continue to play a constructive role in pushing for peace and promoting talks and is willing to work with the international community to carry out necessary mediation when needed,” Yi said during the press conference.

“Solving complex problems requires calmness and rationality, rather than adding fuel to the fire and intensifying contradictions,” Yi said.

Wang continued to emphasize that the relationship between Russia and China is “rock solid.” Yi added that “no matter how sinister” the situation between Ukraine and Russia gets, China and Russia would continue to have “strategic determination” and to support “the comprehensive strategic partnership of coordination.”

Chinese Ambassador to the United Nations Zhang Jun said in a statement posted to Twitter that Yi had “stressed the importance of preventing a large scale humanitarian crisis.”

Jun confirmed that “emergency humanitarian supplies” would be provided by the Red Cross.

European Union High Representative Josep Borrell invited China to mediate the crisis between Ukraine and Russia, adding that “there is no alternative.”

“We cannot be the mediators,” Borrell said. “It’s obvious. … And it cannot be the U.S. It must be China. And I trust that.”

China is currently involved in a political dispute with Lithuania, a NATO ally currently aiding Ukraine.
