Ilhan Omar: US needs universal basic housing, income, and mail-in voting ‘as a start’

Rep. Ilhan Omar outlined the “start” of a progressive agenda that calls for “universal” housing, mail-in ballots, and guaranteed income.

“Here’s what we need to make universal, as a start: Healthcare, School meals, Vote-by-mail, Housing, Basic income,” the Minnesota Democrat tweeted on Monday.

Omar’s call for universal mail-in voting follows her tweet from a day earlier, echoing a similar message.

“Every registered voter should be allowed to #VoteByMail in future elections, no questions asked,” she tweeted.

Omar and Democrats across the country, including House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, have called for an increase in mail-in voting, citing coronavirus fears despite significant evidence of voter fraud and reports that more than 28 million mail-in ballots are unaccounted for over the last decade.

Omar’s fellow Democratic “Squad” members have joined in her demands for universal healthcare, housing, and income.

“This is not the time for half measures. We need to take dramatic action now to stave off the worst public health & economic effects,” New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez argued in March as part of an effort to combat the spread of the coronavirus. “That includes making moves on paid leave, debt relief, waiving work req’s, guaranteeing healthcare, UBI, detention relief (pretrial, elderly, imm).”

“Squad” members Michigan Rep. Rashida Tlaib and Massachusetts Rep. Ayanna Pressley have made similar demands.
