Brown’s permanent replacement to be chosen Nov. 6

The District’s voters will elect a permanent replacement for disgraced D.C. Council Chairman Kwame Brown on the same day they cast ballots for president.

The D.C. Board of Elections and Ethics formally declared a vacancy in Brown’s seat Monday and scheduled a special election for Nov. 6, the same day as the general election. The winner will fill the remainder of Brown’s term, which runs through January 2015.

But that doesn’t mean the District will be without a council leader until the fall. Lawmakers will meet Wednesday to pick an interim chairman to serve until voters make their own selection.

Brown resigned Wednesday afternoon, hours after federal prosecutors charged him with a single count of felony bank fraud. He pleaded guilty Friday to that charge, as well as a misdemeanor count of violating the city’s campaign finance laws.
