HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — Connecticut officials believe some parents of college-aid children are taking advantage of the state’s Medicaid health insurance program for low-income adults to avoid paying for private insurance coverage.
Gov. Dannel P. Malloy’s administration is proposing new eligibility rules to combat the problem. They include counting parental income for applicants under 26 years old who live with their parents or are claimed as a dependent on their parent’s tax return.
But the state healthcare advocate is expressing concerns that young adults who need Medicaid will be unfairly harmed.
The state has begun the process to eventually seek federal permission to make that eligibility change and others. Two legislative committees are scheduled to act on the application following a July 24 hearing.
