Democrat-linked group ordered to pay $8.2M to former GOP candidate for defaming him

A Democrat-linked group has ordered to cough up millions for defaming a failed Republican candidate.

Senate Majority PAC was found by a federal jury to have defamed GOP Senate candidate Roy Moore, and awarded the controversial Republican $8.2 million in damages.

The group was accused of defaming Moore by airing commercials ahead of Moore’s failed 2017 Senate attempt that detailed sexual misconduct allegations made against him.

The win for Moore, which could be overturned on appeal, comes after another defamation suit he filed was dismissed earlier this year.

Moore filed a $95 million lawsuit against actor Sacha Baron Cohen, in which he claimed to have suffered defamation, intentional infliction of emotional distress, and fraud when he was duped by Baron Cohen into giving an unflattering interview on Who is America? , a series that aired in 2017. In the skit, the comedian used a “pedophile detector” on the politician. The judge presiding over the case deemed the act was not intended to be taken seriously.

Moore lost the 2017 election to former Sen. Doug Jones, who flipped the seat to Democratic control for the first time in 25 years. Jones then lost in the 2020 election to Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R).
