Former White House press secretary Sean Spicer’s surprise appearance at Sunday night’s Emmy Awards may have elicited a laugh from those who attended the ceremony, but it did not amuse political reporters.
Spicer appeared on stage during host Stephen Colbert’s monologue to judge the size of the audience at the 69th Primetime Emmy Awards, a reference to his first press conference during which he spoke about the size of the crowd at President Trump’s inauguration.
Though many of the actors, actresses, directors, writers and producers in the audience appeared amused by Spicer’s cameo, political reporters took to Twitter to express their disagreement.
“One funny thing is that Sean Spicer still has not acknowledged that he was lying about the size of the inauguration crowd,” Daniel Dale, a Washington correspondent for the Toronto Star, tweeted.
“This town – where saying something false can translate into fame and money,” tweeted Josh Dawyer, a Politico White House reporter.

“Is it supposed to be comical that the former White House spokesman is now tacitly admitting that he lied to the American people?” Kaitlan Collins, a White House reporter for CNN, tweeted. “Because, as someone who covers this White House and expects those who work in it to be truthful, I don’t find it humorous.”

Spicer resigned from his post at the White House in July, and his last day was Aug. 31.
