WATCH: NY Gov. Kathy Hochul heckled as she announces gubernatorial campaign

New York Gov. Kathy Hochul spoke Thursday to a crowd of hecklers as she accepted her nomination for governor at the state’s 2022 Democratic Convention alongside former Secretary of State Hilary Clinton.

“I accept your nomination, and I do so with a heart full of gratitude and humility,” Hochul began. At the same time, a woman began yelling unintelligibly over her. More voices soon joined the chant. Others in the crowd tried to yell over them, with chants of “Kathy, Kathy, Kathy.”

“Thank you — thank you, everybody,” Hochul responded. “Let me talk about my family. I appreciate the enthusiasm.”

Reporter Ross Barkan was on the scene and took photos of the protesters as they were escorted out of the convention. They were holding signs that read “Pass excluded no more. Pass good cause eviction.” Another protester held up a cutout of Hochul’s head with the phrase “Evictor-in-Chief” stamped on the forehead.

“Protesters are interrupting Hochul’s speech. They are calling for Hochul to pass the Good Cause eviction bill, which will make it harder for landlords to evict tenants,” Barkan tweeted.

“Protesters also focused on Hochul not including money in the budget for undocumented immigrants, the excluded workers fund,” Barkan tweeted. The heckling reportedly went on for nearly four minutes.

The Excluded No More movement surrounds Albany’s new proposed budget, which allots $2.1 billion for roughly 300,000 immigrants who are deemed essential workers. Approximately 1 in 5 New York essential workers are immigrants, according to a report. Good Cause Eviction, on the other hand, would require landlords to receive an order from a judge before evicting their tenants.

“Democrats, it wouldn’t be the same without a lot of ruckus,” Hochul said after a brief pause in the heckling. She attempted to continue on with her speech but stopped several times as the interruptions continued.

Hochul succeeded Andrew Cuomo, who resigned amid sexual harassment allegations. She is New York’s first female governor.
