Phil Mickelson becomes oldest winner of PGA Championship

Phil Mickelson has won the 2021 golf tournament conducted by the Professional Golfers’ Association of America, becoming the oldest player to win one of golf’s major tournaments.

At 50 years old, Mickelson became the oldest player ever to win the Masters Tournament, the U.S. Open, the Open Championship, or the PGA Championship, capping off the four-day tournament at Kiawah Island Golf Resort’s Ocean Course on Kiawah Island, South Carolina, with a victory among a field of 156 players. The new champion will take home a cash prize of $1.98 million.

Mickelson has won 44 events on the PGA Tour, including five major championships: three Masters titles, a PGA Championship, and an Open Championship. He is one of 12 players in the history of golf to win three of the four majors.

The 2020 championship prohibited spectators due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but 10,000 fans were admitted on to the course each day to observe the 2021 tournament.

The 2022 tournament attracted scrutiny after the PGA announced a venue change, moving the championship away from former President Donald Trump’s Bedminster, New Jersey, course.

“It has become clear that conducting the PGA Championship at Trump Bedminster would be detrimental to the PGA of America brand and would put at risk the PGA’s ability to deliver our many programs and sustain the longevity of our mission,” PGA of America President Jim Richerson announced. “Our board has thus made the decision to exercise our right to terminate the contract to hold the 2022 PGA Championship at Trump Bedminster. It was a decision made to ensure the PGA of America and PGA professionals can continue to lead and grow our game for decades to come.”

A spokesman for the Trump Organization said the decision was a “breach of a binding contract,” according to ABC News.
