Kamala Harris will become first female vice president if Associated Press call holds

Should the presidential election victory of apparent winner Joe Biden hold, Sen. Kamala Harris is set to become the first female vice president in the history of the United States.

The Associated Press, Fox News, and CNN declared Biden the victor of the 2020 presidential election on Saturday afternoon as President Trump continued to claim fraud in the vote counts of several key battleground states that will determine the next president.

The three networks called the race after Pennsylvania was confirmed for Biden and its 20 Electoral College votes put the former vice president over the 270-vote threshold to become the 46th president.

Harris, who previously served as the junior senator from California and was the state’s first black female attorney general, would become the highest-ranking elected woman in the country’s history.

Trump, however, said the election “is far from over” in response to news agencies declaring Biden and Harris the winners of the 2020 election, which has been marred by accusations of voter fraud.

In his first acknowledgment of victory, Biden called for unity across the country.

“With the campaign over, it’s time to put the anger and the harsh rhetoric behind us and come together as a nation. It’s time for America to unite. And to heal,” Biden said.

The Trump reelection campaign has already begun the process of contesting the voting process in Pennsylvania, Michigan, and Georgia.
