Weaver is a veteran appellate lawyer. Next month, she’ll become the president of the Bar Association of Montgomery County.
How long have you been a lawyer?
Going on about 18 years. … I’m a litigator and I concentrate on appellate work.
Why did you want to become president of the bar association?
It’s kind of a tradition of my firm. A couple of my partners are former bar presidents. But mostly because I’ve been a member of the bar association for some 18 years and I’ve gained a lot through it.
What do you think the private bar should do about civil legal aid?
We actually have attorneys that volunteer and take on cases and provide representation in cases throughout the duration of the case. And we also have pro bono legal clinics. There’s clinics that operate throughout the county, two in Silver Spring and one in Germantown. … Really, that is part of the bar’s goal … to provide service to the community. And I think we do a pretty darn good job of it through those two avenues.
Is there anything you want to see changed about the way the Montgomery bar does business?
I think that with all business areas, technology is coming along and creates new possibilities to innovate. So I would like to see our bar explore using social media to reach the public. … As I said, our members do a lot of good things. And with all the lawyer jokes — about sharks and everything else — that’s part of the public perception of lawyers and the legal profession. I would like to see us explore using social media to let the public know of some of things both within the legal community and outside the legal community that our members do. Because they’re not just good attorneys: They’re really good people.
