Pennsylvania Sen. Pat Toomey revealed that he voted for Donald Trump Tuesday evening after holding out his support of the GOP nominee since May.
Toomey announced his vote to reporters after leaving his polling station in Zionsville, saying that it was a “tough call” to make.
“I voted for Donald Trump,” Toomey said making his revelation.
“I really only came to this decision in the past couple of days,” Toomey said. “In the end it was a tough call for me as I’m sure it was for many Pennsylvanians.”
“In the end I decided we’ve just gotta change the course we’re on, so I voted for Donald Trump,” Toomey added.
The incumbent Republican has been criticized by Democratic challenger Katie McGinty and many high-profile Democrats for not announcing whether he would support Trump or not despite consistently saying that he was bothered by various comments and stances held by the GOP nominee.
In an op-ed released soon after Trump won the Indiana primary and became the GOP nominee, Toomey called Trump’s candidacy “highly problematic.” He also tried to frame himself as an independent candidate throughout his race against McGinty, saying that he was willing to break with his party on certain issues while McGinty would be a “rubber stamp” for former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.
