A U.S. Marine standing guard outside the Marine Barracks in Washington was hospitalized Friday morning after apparently shooting himself by accident.

The barracks covers several blocks in Southeast Washington, and includes the home of the commandant, the Marine Corps highest officer.

“It’s appears to a case of negligent discharge of a gun,” said a Marine corps official who asked not to be identified because the case is under investigation.

The unidentified Marine was rushed to George Washington University Hospital, where his condition is stable.

“At approximately 8 a.m. Friday, June 15, 2018, there was an incident where a Marine sustained a self-inflicted gunshot wound while standing post position at Marine Barracks Washington.
