Newt Gingrich raised concerns about the cognitive abilities of Dr. Anthony Fauci, President Joe Biden’s chief medical adviser who has become a target among Republicans throughout the coronavirus pandemic.
The former House speaker brought up Fauci‘s brain Wednesday as he explained why he believes the longtime director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases should retire.
“Watching his decay — I mean people worry about President Biden. I worry about Fauci in terms of his cognitive impairment,” Gingrich said on Fox News, noting he used to work with Fauci and believed he was once “one of the most important scientists in the world.”

Gingrich did not provide evidence to back up his assertion about the 80-year-old’s mental fitness, but the comment evokes a common refrain among Biden’s critics who question the president’s cognitive functions and ability to lead.
The segment with Gingrich began with a focus on Fauci’s interview with McClatchy, in which he talked about the spread of the delta variant of COVID-19 and warned the number of infections in the United States could double within weeks to 200,000 cases a day.
