Iraq tells Pompeo to send delegation to determine how troops will withdraw

Iraqi Prime Minister Adel Abdul-Mahdi asked Secretary of State Mike Pompeo to send a delegation to the country to create a plan for U.S. troops to withdraw.

A statement from Abdul-Mahdi said he made the request when Pompeo called the Iraqi premier on Thursday night.

The Iraqi leader asked Pompeo to “send delegates to Iraq to prepare a mechanism to carry out the parliament’s resolution regarding the withdrawal of foreign troops from Iraq,” the statement said, according to the Associated Press.

President Trump has threatened Iraq with sanctions if the United States is forced to withdraw its troops from the country after the Iraqi Parliament voted to expel American forces in response to the killing of Iranian commander Qassem Soleimani.

The nonbinding resolution was passed Sunday and condemned the drone strike that killed Soleimani near the Baghdad airport.

“The prime minister said American forces had entered Iraq and drones are flying in its airspace without permission from Iraqi authorities and this was a violation of the bilateral agreements,” the statement added.

Top U.S. military officials have said there are no plans to withdraw American forces from Iraq.
