Catholic University names new president

John Garvey, the dean of Boston College Law School, has been named the next president of Catholic University of America.

Garvey, a constitutional law expert, will replace David O’Connell on July 1, the university announced Tuesday.

Garvey, 61, is the university’s third lay president. His appointment required Vatican approval.

“I can think of no other job I would have left BC for,” Garvey said in a statement. “But I have been committed for much of my life to advancing the cause of Catholic higher education, and there is no better place to do that than at The Catholic University of America.”

Prior to leading Boston College, Garvey was an assistant to the solicitor general in the Reagan administration and was a law professor at Notre Dame and the University of Kentucky.
