Cory Booker on gun registration: Only ‘gun runners and criminals’ should fear the idea

While discussing his newly unveiled plan to increase gun control, presidential candidate Sen. Cory Booker, D-N.J., said the only people who should fear a gun owner or firearm registry would be criminals.

“One of the pushbacks is you license guns, you make it more difficult for honorable gun owner to engage in their Second Amendment right and the people who want to get guns will shoot in the street are going to do it anyway because no one enforces the law,” CBS News’ John Dickerson said to Booker on Monday.

“That kind of resignation frustrates me — to be honest — because we know that this is not a plan that any law-abiding gun owner should be concerned about it,” Booker said. “The people who should be concerned are two groups, one, the people who want to break the law, gun runners and criminals, and the gun manufacturers who have been working in an ungodly way to undermine the safety and security of this nation.”

In his plan, Booker proposed a federal gun license that would be needed in order for people to buy firearms.

“Just as a driver’s license demonstrates a person’s eligibility and proficiency to drive a car, a gun license demonstrates that a person is eligible and can meet certain basic safety and training standards necessary to own a gun,” the plan states.

In order to obtain the gun license, applicants would have to submit their fingerprints, “provide basic background information, and demonstrate completion of a certified gun safety course.”

The license would be valid for five years and states who already have gun license programs would be able to continue as long as they meet federal government standards.
