The man accused of shooting six Philadelphia police officers on Wednesday during an hourslong stand off was formally arraigned on Saturday morning.
Maurice Hill, 36, was charged with multiple counts of attempted murder, aggravated assault, simple assault, weapons offenses, and a slew of other charges.
“There will be a lot of charges,” Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner said. “These are more than enough charges so that Mr. Maurice Hill may never exit jail.”
Hill allegedly opened fire on six officers as they were serving a narcotics warrant early on Wednesday. Hill remained in a standoff with law enforcement until shortly after midnight, when he surrendered without being injured. It is not clear whether the warrant was being served to Hill or another individual.
Hill’s lawyer claims his client called him from inside the barricaded home in the Nicetown-Tioga neighborhood of Philadelphia.
“Maurice called me in a panic, obviously,” attorney Shaka Johnson said. “He did not want this to end violently, and he really was sort of taking an opportunity to speak his peace. I told him, ‘You gotta surrender, man.'”
All six officers were released later on Wednesday with non-life-threatening injuries.
