Woman exonerated in murder case after 17 years

TORRANCE, Calif. (AP) — A woman who has spent 17 years in prison after being convicted of murder in the death of a homeless man has been exonerated by a Los Angeles County judge.

Superior Court Judge Mark Arnold also ruled Friday that Susan Mellen should not spend another minute in jail, and she’s being processed for release from the courthouse in suburban Torrance.

Mellen was convicted of the 1997 killing based solely on the testimony of a notorious liar.

Mellen’s case was investigated by an organization known as Innocence Matters that seeks to free people who are wrongly convicted.
