Tribute honors MLK, Carter

Two great black leaders will be honored at the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra?s 22nd Annual Tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Dr. Nathan Carter, a Maryland arts leader and longtime music director of the Morgan State University Choir, will be honored alongside Dr. King in the tribute, which is presented in cooperation with Maryland?s Commission on African American History and Culture.

“This concert is a testament to Dr. King?s vision of unity through common ground. As we find common ground in our music and in our cultural heritage, I can think of no better way for our state to honor his memory than this musical celebration,” said program host Darin Atwater in a statement. “I am especially moved by this year?s program, which is dedicated to the profound contributions of my own mentor, Dr. Nathan Carter.”

The concert includes three of Maryland?s best musical ensembles: the BSO, Soulful Symphony, and the Morgan State University Choir. BSO/Peabody Conducting Fellow Joseph Young will conduct the BSO and Soulful Symphony in the first half of the program, which includes works by Adolphus Hailstork, Duke Ellington, William Grant Still and James Lee. Current MSU Choir Director Eric Conway will conduct his choir, accompanied by the BSO and Soulful Symphony in the second half of the program, which is dedicated to the music of Dr. Carter.
