Iran Makes A Mockery of Negotiations

If you haven’t yet read the document that is reportedly Iran’s response to the Obama administration’s request for negotiations, you should. At a time when Iran is arming the Taliban in Afghanistan, waging proxy war against America and her allies in Iraq, waging proxy war against Israel, harboring al Qaeda terrorists, sponsoring numerous other terrorist organizations (both Sunni and Shiite) around the world, quashing internal dissent, and continuing onward with its formerly clandestine nuclear program, the mullahs say:

The Islamic Republic of Iran believes that within the framework of principles of justice, democracy and multilateralism, a wide range of security, political, economic and cultural issues at regional and global levels could be included in these negotiations with a view of fostering constructive cooperation for advancement of nations and promotion of peace and stability in the region and the world.

That is, the mullahs want to talk about everything but the real issues at hand, including:

Elevating the weight and position of environmental issues in the international relations and fostering collective participation in the management of environmental issues.

Yes, the Iranians are sponsoring attacks on American forces in both Iraq and Afghanistan, but we should get together to talk about the environment. The mullahs want their share of space, including an:

Equitable definition and codification of the rights to space and sharing of oil possessors of space technologies in the management and fair use of space.

We cannot agree about how things should go here on earth, so let’s talk about the next frontier? Despite the pillaging of ordinary Iranian citizens who just want a say in their nation’s future, the mullahs are humanitarians. After all, they want to make sure the following is included in the talks:

Enhancement of ethical and human considerations and their full observance in international mechanisms, ties and practices.

To which Obama’s diplomats should respond: Remember Neda? The Iranians did not entirely avoid the subject of nuclear proliferation. They want to discuss:

Promoting the universality of NPT mobilizing global resolve and putting into action real and fundamental programs toward complete disarmament and preventing development and proliferation of nuclear, chemical and microbial weapons.

As the IAEA has found, the Iranians themselves have repeatedly violated the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), thus the West’s concern. So before we focus on the NPT’s “universality” — which is undoubtedly an Iranian attempt to focus the talks on Israel or any other proliferation issue the Iranians can — how about we talk about Iran’s countless deceptions? Of course, the mullahs know how to fix their non-compliance…just change how the IAEA works. The Iranians say that talks should include (emphasis added):

Promoting a rule-based and equitable oversight function of the IAEA and creating the required mechanisms for use of clean nuclear energy in agriculture, industry, and medicine and power generation.

That is, it’s time for the Iranians to have more of a say in how their nuclear program is monitored. The rest of the Iranian response to the Obama administration is just as bad, throwing around concepts like “democracy and justice” as if the Iranian regime has a real interest in promoting either. In sum, the Iranian response is a bad joke. It makes a complete mockery of the situation. The Obama administration will enter into talks with the mullahs anyway. Just don’t expect America’s diplomats to get anywhere.
