Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign on Wednesday expressed dismay that rival Donald Trump would suggest that Russian hackers should try to find the emails Clinton has concealed from the public.
“This has to be the first time that a major presidential candidate has actively encouraged a foreign power to conduct espionage against his political opponent,” campaign spokesman Jake Sullivan said in a statement.
“That’s not hyperbole, those are just the facts. This has gone from being a matter of curiosity, and a matter of politics, to being a national security issue,” Sullivan added.

Trump earlier in the day suggested that hackers should try to locate 33,000 emails Clinton deleted from her private server in an effort to conceal them from the public. “Russia, if you’re listening, I hope you’re able to find the 33,000 emails that are missing,” Trump told reporters at a Florida press conference.
The Democratic National Committee has been reeling since the Friday release of 20,000 emails hacked from the party’s servers. Speculation has been rampant that even more will be unveiled in the days ahead, and Clinton’s campaign has conceded the likelihood of that scenario is high.
