Cummings plans meeting with Trump on high drug prices

A leading House Democrat said he is planning to meet with President Trump to discuss how to fight high drug prices.

Rep. Elijah Cummings, D-Md., told the Washington Examiner Tuesday that a date for the meeting has not been scheduled. He said Trump asked for the meeting.

Cummings said that the meeting with Trump is “a big deal for me” as prescription drugs are one of his top priorities. Cummings has led several investigations in Congress alongside Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., on high drug prices.

Trump has repeatedly broken with Republican orthodoxy and attacked drug companies for raising high prices. He recently said that the pharmaceutical industry has been “politically protected” in Washington.

Trump has also proposed giving Medicare the power to negotiate for lower drug prices, a common healthcare reform from Democrats.

Cummings said that he was optimistic that action on high drug prices could happen.
