White House: Wealthy may gain from tax cut aimed at middle class

The White House acknowledged Wednesday that some wealthier Americans may benefit from the Republican plan to cut taxes, but stressed that the intent is still to deliver cuts to the middle class.

“The focus, as we’ve said time and time again, the focus and the priority of the framework that the White House has laid out is to benefit the middle class, and that’s what the priority is,” said White House press secretary Sarah Sanders.

Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said Wednesday morning that it’s “very hard” not to give some breaks to the wealthy in the process of cutting taxes. That admission came after he had said previously that the intent was not to cut taxes for high earners.

Sanders mirrored that at the White House briefing.

“That there may be some people that receive tax cuts that are also in the wealthy bracket? Yes,” she said. “But the fact is the priority again remains that middle-class Americans are the ones that are most impacted, and that’s where the priority and the focus was.”
