Marlon Bundo, rabbit who starred in book series penned by Pence’s daughter, dies

The Pence family rabbit, Marlon Bundo, who made history as “bunny of the United States,” has died.

Charlotte Pence Bond, the daughter of former Vice President Mike Pence, confirmed his death Saturday in an Instagram post. Bundo was the inspiration behind three children’s books written by Pence Bond and her mother, former second lady Karen Pence.

“God knew we’d need this ball of love in our lives and that he’d bring such joy to people all over the world. Somehow, he taught me how to always try to be kind first and never stop making an effort to get along,” she said in her post. “We had some wild times together and I’m forever grateful. Rest in sweet peace, little bunny.”

Pence Bond said she first adopted Bundo on Craigslist for a film project she was working on in college in 2013, according to the Chicago Tribune. Pence Bond said she named him Marlon Bundo after an exchange with the previous owner, who said, “Make me an offer.” That line reminded her of a movie featuring actor Marlon Brando.

The rabbit, who had his own Instagram account with over 30,000 followers, became the inspiration for Marlon Bundo’s A Day in the Life of the Vice President, Marlon Bundo’s A Day in the Nation’s Capital, and Marlon Bundo’s Best Christmas Ever — books that raised money for charities, including a group that works to fight human trafficking and a program for pediatric cancer patients.

In 2018, comedian John Oliver released a parody book, Last Week Tonight with John Oliver Presents a Day in the Life of Marlon Bundo. The book, meant for children, was intended to critique the vice president’s position on gay and transgender issues by portraying Bundo as gay. Pence Bond responded that she was supportive of Oliver’s book and liked how it was giving money to charities.

Other pets with ties to presidential administrations have gotten bad news in recent months. Major, the dog of President Joe Biden, was removed from the White House last December following a biting incident, and Biden’s dog Champ and Bo, who belonged to former President Barack Obama, both died in 2021.
