D.C. taxi commission extends $1 fuel surcharge

Riders in D.C. taxis will continue to fork over an extra buck per ride to offset a rise in fuel prices after the D.C. Taxicab Commission extended the fuel surcharge through Nov. 17.

The emergency ruling was taken on July 20 and implemented on Wednesday, according to the notice that was officially published in the D.C. register on Friday.

Mayor Vince Gray ordered the $1 surcharged earlier this spring, but it expired on Tuesday.

“Without the fuel surcharge taxicab operators may not be able to continue their public service obligation to provide vital transportation service to the public,” the commission wrote in Friday’s public’s notice. “The increased costs of fuel may cause many taxicab operators to curtail or discontinue taxicab service in the District because of an inability to earn a fair return on their investment in daily fuel costs.”
