Republicans will soon start unveiling their long-awaited agenda, beginning with a proposal to reform welfare, House Speaker Paul Ryan announced Wednesday.
“They will be introduced one at a time over the course of June,” Ryan said.
House Republicans met early in 2016 to map out an agenda project based on six policy issues, including welfare reform. Lawmakers are also tackling tax reform, healthcare reform and restoring the constitutional authority of Congress to write laws, which they believe has been undercut by the Obama administration.
Ryan said the agenda is aimed at 2017, when a Republican president might occupy the White House.
“Our goal is to go bold,” Ryan said. “The kind of things you can only get done with a Republican president.”
The House may not vote on any of these plans this year, Ryan said.
“That is really not the goal,” Ryan said. “This is an agenda for the next president. This is the beginning of that very important legislative process. You should not enact big legislation without explaining to the American people what you want to do.”
