Mitch McConnell’s Democratic challenger Amy McGrath explained her recent flip-flop about Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh during her Sunday night appearance on MSNBC’s Kasie DC.
Earlier this month, McGrath told the Courier-Journal that she would have voted in favor of Kavanaugh’s confirmation despite the allegations of sexual misconduct, but then changed her mind on social media after facing backlash for the remark.
Kasie Hunt, the show’s host, asked the retired Marine pilot about her change of mind.
“Well, I was asked about Justice Kavanaugh and in that same interview, I talked about my reservations against him, with his rulings. I talked about the very serious allegations, very credible allegations against him by Dr. Ford,” McGrath answered. “I said in the moment that I looked at his basic qualifications and I said I would vote for him, probably yes. I knew at the time the moment I left that interview, that probably yes wasn’t an answer, wasn’t the best answer.”
She continued, “I needed to take a step back and look at the bigger picture and I did that. Based on his rulings in the past, I knew that I could not vote for Justice Brett and I corrected that right away in the most professional manner that I could.”
“For you, was it about the rulings. I mean, for a lot of people who were reacting to what you said, the question is Dr. Christine Blasey Ford. Do you believe what she said?” Hunt followed up.
McGrath answered, “Well I think she was credible. And here’s the thing about what happened in this Supreme Court, pushing through this nomination the way Mitch McConnell did. You know in the Marine Corps, I’ve sat on boards, I’ve sat on promotion boards, I’ve sat on disciplinary boards. Whenever there is a serious allegation the way that there was in this case. You stop the board. You have an investigation. You look at all the evidence. That just didn’t happen in this case.”
The Sunday following the flip-flop McGrath canceled a scheduled interview on Hunt’s show.
