Trotter left the sheriff’s office two weeks after the incident, and the office said he “retired during [an] internal investigation on excessive use of force.”

South Carolina Law Enforcement Division agents who carried out the investigation detained Trotter, and he was sent to the Pickens County Detention Center, authorities said.
