President Trump asked Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu straight up if he actually wanted peace between his country and the Palestinians during a phone call last year.
Axios reported Sunday Trump and Netanyahu were speaking about the peace process between Israel and the Palestinians. At one point in the conversation, when Trump raised the point about Netanyahu possibly angering the Palestinians by approving more settlers in disputed territory, he asked if Netanyahu genuinely wanted peace.
“The President has great relationships with a number of foreign leaders but that doesn’t mean he can’t be aggressive when it comes to negotiating what’s best for America,” press secretary Sarah Sanders said in a statement to Axios.
According to the report, Trump often improvises in his talks with foreign leaders and it sometimes catches his staff off-guard.
Some foreign leaders also struggle with it, but others — such as Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and French President Emmanuel Macron — understand him and find him refrefreshing.
