An Indiana man expecting a $1,700 stimulus check was briefly a multimillionaire.
Charles Calvin, a volunteer firefighter in New Chicago, Indiana, told WGNTV that he was shocked when he visited an ATM as the first coronavirus relief checks began to be distributed across the county.
“I went to the ATM at the Family Express and once I withdrew $200 out of my account, I looked at the available balance still left in my account,” Calvin recounted, explaining that he noticed that there had been $8.2 million deposited instead of $1,700.
Calvin reportedly called his bank on Monday and they told him the millions were no longer there, but the expected $1,700 government deposit was.
“It kind of sucks,” he explained. “You go from being a millionaire one second, then back to being broke again. But hey, once you’re poor you don’t have anywhere else to go but up.”
Coronavirus relief checks began to be directly deposited into bank accounts last week. The CARES Act provides residents with incomes below $75,000 a $1,200 direct payment. An additional $500 is being provided for each dependent under 17 years old.
