Healthy hints when hitting the road during the holidays

The Air Transport Association of America is estimating that 25 million passengers will travel all across the world during the Thanksgiving holiday. Airlines expect that with the 3 percent increase of travelers over last year, planes will be more than 80 percent full from today to Nov. 28, with Nov. 26 and 27 being the busiest. Given the new security measures the ATA recommends familiarizing yourself and your family with the TSA?s guidelines for smoother travel.

Dr. Michael Zimring, director for the Center of Wilderness and Travel Medicine at Mercy Medical Center, and author of “Healthy Travel,” says that one of the most important things about traveling is to remember to stay hydrated.

“[People] should drink a lot of water, as opposed to alcohol and sodas, on the plane,” he said, adding that getting up and walking around while traveling long distances is also important. Zimring also recommends bringing a small bottle of hand sanitizer or alcohol wipes if gel is not allowed on the plane.

“You should be thinking about hand washing, using paper towels to open doors,” he said. “The main thing I would recommend is to stay away from germs.”
