Trump: Fake news press is ‘desperate to distract’ from strong economy by asking about Russia

President Trump blasted news outlets Monday for being “desperate to distract” from his effective stewardship of the economy after reporters clashed with White House press secretary Sarah Sanders for dodging questions about the controversial 2016 Trump Tower meeting.

“The Fake News Media is desperate to distract from the economy and record setting economic numbers and so they keep talking about the phony Russian Witch Hunt,” Trump tweeted.

“In many ways this is the greatest economy in the HISTORY of America and the best time EVER to look for a job!” he continued.

Reporters were left angry and frustrated with Sanders Monday when she cut short their queries about news Trump had dictated a statement about Donald Trump Jr.’s meeting with a Kremlin-linked lawyer at Trump Tower in July 2016, despite previous denials issued by her and the president’s personal legal team.

“Once again, I’m not going to get into a back and forth,” Sanders said when asked about the basis she had for first saying months ago that Trump had nothing to do with the statement.

The statement indicated that the meeting was ostensibly about adoptions, when other emails showed it had been arranged on the pretense of sharing political dirt on Hillary Clinton.

The Labor Department reported Friday that in May the U.S. had added 223,000 jobs, the overall unemployment rate fell to 3.8 percent, and black unemployment hit a new record low.

However, White House chief economic adviser Larry Kudlow and other economic pundits have said the Trump administration’s decision to impose steel and aluminum imports tariffs on certain countries, such as Canada, Mexico, and the European Union, could “jeopardize” solid U.S. job growth.
