It’s still unclear who will eventually succeed the 77-year-old leader who has been in power since 1999 and deal with an emboldened opposition.

President Abdelaziz Bouteflika, who had a stroke last year, won a staggering 81 percent of the vote in Thursday’s election despite not even appearing in his own campaign.
