Fairfax to celebrate Squirrel Appreciation Day

Fairfax County is helping its residents celebrate the small things in life. Like squirrels.

“Even the most ardent squirrel haters grudgingly admit that the furry little rodents are both clever and cute and are impressed by their arboreal acrobatics,” said a public notice from the county announcing the celebration of Squirrel Appreciation Day this Saturday.

The Hidden Oaks Nature Center will host a squirrel celebration from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. on Squirrel Day. The family-friendly event will teach children four years and older about how squirrels survive in the suburbs and how to make backyards more squirrel-friendly.

The holiday was first created in 2001 by a wildlife rehabilitator in Asheville, N.C., according to the county’s release.
